The Thai cabinet have decided to use the American 911 number for official emergency calls in Thailand. The number is not yet in use and no date has yet been set.
Col Sansern Kaewkamnerd, deputy spokesperson of the Prime Minister’s Officer said that the Cabinet accepted the governments bill to use 911 as the official emergency call. 911 will be the main number that will connect callers to government sectors without any fees. As for the previous numbers, 191, 1169 will still be used.
Col Kaewkamnerd said that 911 and 112 were in consideration because 911 is the official emergency number in America and 112 in Europe. After much deliberation, we decided that 911 will be the official number because it is easier to remember and understand.
Moreover, callers who abuse the use of the emergency numbers will face criminal prosecution. However there is still no date for when the number will be officially used in Thailand.
