Thai villagers said they saw four Thai soldiers injured from the clash.
Authorities were evacuating people living in the area.
A long-running dispute between the two countries over land near a 900-year-old temple erupted into four days of clashes in February, leaving at least 10 people dead and prompting a UN appeal for a lasting ceasefire.

The exchange of fire between Thai and Cambodian troops along the border of Surin province started again on Saturday morning, reports said.
Si Phachuea, village headman of Ban Nong Kanna in Suring Phanom Dong Rak district, about five kilometer from the Thai-Cambodian border, said Cambodian soldiers started firing at Thai troops with heavy weapons and machineguns about 6am.
He and his villagers had to rush to bunkers in the village for safety.
Army spokesman Col Sansern Kaewkamnerd said on Saturday that the latest border clash erupted at Ta Kwai and Ta Muen temples in Phanom Dong Rak, the same point where the gunfight took place on Friday morning.
There is no report on casualty and injury for the moment, he said.

World alarmed at rise in violence, says Surin
Tensions continued to escalate in Surin's Phanom Dong Rak district after a new round of border clashes between Thai and Cambodian troops yesterday, the third in three days.
Both sides were bringing in reinforcements right along the border including heavy weaponry, heightening fears that war could be looming.
Yesterday's clashes started at about 10am and stopped at about 6pm near Ta Muen Thom and Ta Kwai temples in Surin. Three more Thai soldiers were injured.
Four Thai soldiers have been killed and 27 injured as of yesterday since fighting first broke out on Friday.

Ceasefire agreed after military commanders meet : source
Phnom Penh - A senior Cambodian military source said Thursday that Thai and Cambodian military commanders agreed a ceasefire during a morning meeting.
The source, who asked not to be named, told the German Press Agency dpa that General Chea Morn, who commands the armed forces in the Cambodian military's Region 4, had agreed the ceasefire with a Thai general.
"The meeting has helped to ease tensions along the border," the source said, before adding that Cambodia remained to be convinced that the Thai military "was serious" about the ceasefire.
He said shelling had stopped along the border after reports of artillery battles earlier in the day, adding that since mid-morning there had been just a few reports of small-arms fire.
A soldier at Ta Moan temple, the scene of some of the heaviest shelling over the past seven days, confirmed that fighting had ceased in his area.
Thai defence officials were not available to comment.
Cambodian government spokesman Phay Siphan said the ceasefire had been agreed "in principle."
The fighting between the two nations has killed 14 soldiers and one civilian, and wounded nearly 60 others.
Clashes involving heavy artillery and small-arms fire had erupted on a daily basis since Friday at a series of six locations on Cambodia's northern and north-west border with Thailand.

One soldier was killed and four others wounded in fresh clashes along border in Surin on Thursday night, Army Region 2 commander Lt Gen Thawatchai Samutsakorn said on Friday morning.
Army spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd said the fighting started with an exchange of machinegun fire about 9pm and continued until about 5am Friday.
Surin governor Serm Chainarong said on Friday morning that the two sides exchanged fire using small arms at Ta Meun Tom and Ta Kwai temples about 11pm on Thursday and stopped about 5am on Friday.

More than 41,000 local people in risk districts of Phanom Dong Rak, Kap Choeng and Sangka have been relocated to 34 evacuation centres in Surin province, he added.
The overnight clash shattered the truce agreement announced yesterday by the army chief.
Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban indicated there might be a chance to salvage the truce.
"It's not considered a breach of ceasefire because they have used personal firearms. But if the clash expands with heavy weapons, that means the agreement is no longer valid," he told reporters.
Both sides had reacted cautiously to Thursday's peace deal, struck after talks among local commanders.
Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Thursday that the agreement was a "good sign", but added that "we have to wait and see whether real peace has been achieved".
Thai and Cambodian commanders had agreed at the talks to reopen a border gate and "create a climate to allow civilians to return home", according to the Cambodian defence ministry.
Seven Thai troops and eight Cambodian soldiers have died since the clashes began last Friday. Bangkok has said a Thai civilian has also been killed.
Heavy weapons fire has also strayed towards villages around the frontier, causing over 41,000 people in Thailand and 30,000 in Cambodia to flee their homes.
The two countries have each accused the other of sparking the violence.

Fresh fighting erupted on the Thai-Cambodian border, both armies said Friday, shattering a truce aimed at ending the bloodiest clashes between the neighbours in decades as the toll rose to 16.

One Thai soldier died and four were wounded in sporadic skirmishes that broke out hours after a ceasefire deal was agreed on Thursday, 2nd Army spokesman Prawit Hookaew said.
"The situation is now calming but still tense," Col Prawit added after the skirmishes flared overnight.
Fighting around two temples at the jungle frontier between the countries, now in its eighth day, has caused tens of thousands of people to flee from their homes.
Deputy Prime Minister in charge of security affairs Suthep Thaugsuban indicated there might be a chance to salvage the truce.
"It's not considered a breach of ceasefire because they have used personal firearms. But if the clash expands with heavy weapons, that means the agreement is no longer valid," Mr Suthep told reporters.
"There was a brief clash early on Friday," Cambodian field commander Suos Sothea told AFP by telephone, without giving further details.

Torsdag indgik landene ellers en aftale om at indstille skyderierne, men våbenhvilen holdt mindre end et døgn.
Anspændt stemning
- Situationen er nu lidt mere rolig, men fortsat anspændt, siger oberst Prawit Hookaew, talsmand for hæren i det nordøstlige Thailand.
Der har været spredte sammenstød i området i adskillige uger, men i de seneste syv dage er kampene blevet intensiveret. 15 soldater er dræbt over de syv dage.
Striden står om grænsedragningen ved det 900 år gamle Preah Vihear-tempel.

A senior Cambodian military officer has hammered out a ceasefire with Thai troops at Ta Muen Thom temple in Phanom Dong Rak district of Surin province.
Col Neak Vong, deputy commander of Cambodia's 402nd Brigade, contacted Col Adul Boonthamcharoen, commander of the 26th Pararanger Military Regiment around 4 pm to seek a ceasefire at the temple ruins of Ta Muen Thom.
After the meeting, both sides agreed to stop fighting and Cambodian troops agreed to move away from an area near the temple ruins.
A Thai army source said Col Neak Vong gave as his reasons for the ceasefire the fact that he wanted to collect several bodies of Cambodian troops killed in gunfire exchanges with Thai troops during the past 10 days, from a forest opposite the temple.
The bodies have begun rotting and giving off a bad odour.
He also told the Thai side that the morale of Cambodian troops has been shaken following the deaths of their fellow soldiers and a shortage of food and weapons, added the source.
After the agreement, Thai soldiers erected ranger flags in orange and green in front of the temple to protect their sovereignty in the area.
A wooden fence was set up at the entrance of the temple, reinforced with barbed wire.
A source said the ceasefire agreement at the operational level was a good sign that the border conflict would end soon.
Cambodian Defence Ministry spokesman Chhum Socheat said yesterday that one Cambodian soldier was killed in fighting with Thailand yesterday morning.
The two sides exchanged automatic weapons fire overnight and before dawn yesterday round the Ta Kwai and Ta Muen temples, about 14 kilometres from Ta Muen Thom.
The Cambodian soldier was killed by shrapnel from an artillery round, he said.
Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva yesterday said proposals to set up a committee to handle the Preah Vihear temple issue at the World Heritage Committee meetings this month and in June will be submitted to cabinet for consideration tomorrow.
In his weekly television talk show, Mr Abhisit assured the public that state agencies would protect the country's sovereignty even after the House is dissolved this week.
The border situation was showing progress as Thai and Cambodian military authorities were in close contact to prevent the dispute from escalating, he said. Exchanges of heavy arms fire between troops from the two countries had taken place earlier.
But after two rounds of negotiations, troops were now clashing with light weapons only, he said.
Second Army commander Thawatchai Samutsakhon has asked his subordinates to exercise restraint.
Seven Thai troops have been killed and scores of soldiers wounded in the border clashes with Cambodian soldiers, said Lt Gen Thawatchai.
A source said two evacuees taking refuge at a shelter in Prasat district of Surin died after suffering from stress.
Ms Reya Saengtawan, 42, a native of Phanom Dong Rak district, died at the temporary shelter at Nikhom Prasat centre, and Mrs Thong Khantiwong, 76, another evacuee, was taken to a local hospital and died.
The Second Army's front operation centre in Surin said seven Thai soldiers have been killed and 120 others wounded since the border clashes erupted.
The fighting had also killed one civilian, injured seven others, and damaged 11 houses.
