Two expat con men victimising tourists
Two British expats, falsely representing various organizations and using forged documents, go around the island victimizing kind-hearted residents and businesses, a source has told Samui Express.
The source, an expat himself and a longtime resident on Samui, said the two con men have been conducting their nefarious activities for many months now.
He described one of the two men as a man in his 60s, soft spoken but a smooth talking professional trickster.
The other partner was described as a young man in his 30s.
“These men go to bars, which are frequented by expats and foreign tourists and usually show documents, usually forged, and claim they are collecting money for a worthy cause,” the source said.
He said about six months ago he encountered these men collecting money for Koh Samui Hospital in Nathon.
Then he said later he heardabout them also collecting money for Samui Rescue.
“Of course, these organizations never received the money,”
said the source.
The source said about a month ago, the older of the two con men was seen in a bar in Lamai showing a document to
a person.
“An anonymous man nearby must have recognized who he was because the unidentified man went to approach the old man and grabbed the document from him and told him it was forged,” the source said.
The con man allegedly told the anonymous man that the document was genuine and then got his phone and made a call.
“Later, the con man handed the guy his phone to talk to anotherman on the other line,” the
source said.
He said what happened af-terwards was that the con man suddenly rushed out and run away leaving to the guy the cellphone and the alleged forged document.
According to the source, both the original copy of the document and the cellphone were later surrendered to the
tourist police in Bophut.
A copy of the forged document, which served as the receipt for the items surrendered to the police, was given to Samui Express.
Typed on the upper right side of the alleged forged document, all in upper case, was Koh Samui Hospital and its address. In the middle part of the said document were two names, a certain Mr. M Wynn and a certain Mr. T Conner, identified as “volantary fund raisers”.
The source said that aside from the fact that the font was different from the one used in the upper part of the letter, the middle part was also not in a straight line and the lower part of the document bore a different set of fonts.
“It was obvious the document was tampered with,” the source said.
“Aside from its many spelling and grammatical errors, the forged document also bear the signature of a hospital official who has retired six years ago and was already living in Hua Hin,” the source said.
The source said more than a month ago, the older of the two con men showed up at a bar in Lamai but was confronted by a regular farang customer, who recognized him. The man was able to get away again.
The source said the tourist police in Koh Samui have already identified the two con men and are now looking for them.
