Bhumibol Adulyadej was the ninth monarch of Thailand’s Chakri dynasty. Conferred with the title King Bhumibol the Great in 1987 – an honour only previously bestowed on six former Thailand monarchs – he was also known as King Rama IX.

His reign spanned 70 years, 126 days making him at the time of his death
• the world's longest-serving head of state
• the longest-reigning monarch in Thailand’s history
• the longest-serving monarch having reigned only as an adult

A talented musician, an accomplished yachtsman, and the first Thai monarch to hold not one, but two patents for inventions, King Bhumibol Adulyadej was a Renaissance man truly worthy of the title 'King of Kings'.

Here we take a look at work on the construction of the Royal Crematorium for his funeral between October 25 – 29 at Sanam Luang, a 12 hectare (29.65 acre) open field directly in front of the Grand Palace in Bangkok, and by artisans at the Department of Fine Arts who have been working for almost 12 months to ensure the funeral of King Bhumibol Adulyadej is worthy of Thailand’s King of Kings.
