A good Samaritan who came to the aid of an elderly Norwegian couple stuck in thick mud in Krabi has won widespread praise after a video of his heroics went online. Chat Ubonchinda, 44, a worker in tambon Pak Nam in Muang district of this southern province, lay face-down in the mud to rescue the elderly tourists after his earlier attempts to free them failed.

A Krabi fisherman who saved a Norwegian couple stuck in the riverside mud received a “Sua Samart” (honorary jacket) in Bangkok on Tuesday.

Chat Ubonjinda, 44, flew to Bangkok to receive the honour.

The rescue, caught on the video, was not easy.

The mud was too thick to pull the couple out so Chat had to lie down and let the couple step on his back to escape the mud.

Before leaving for Bangkok on Monday, Chat received medical treatment for his back pain by the Red Cross Krabi office.

To praise his good deed and sacrifice, his house will get much-needed electricity.

Muang Krabi Municipality will construct a public road leading to his home so that electricity poles can be erected.
