As per November 14th 2013 all applicants to the Schengen States are requested to submit biometric data
As part of the visa application all applicants to the Schengen States are requested to submit biometric data – ten fingerprints - as per November 14th 2013. The finger scans will be stored in the “Visa Information System” (VIS) for the following 59 months.

VIS is a system that allows Schengen States to exchange visa data. The main purpose of the VIS is to simplify the visa issuance process, facilitate checks at external borders and to enhance security for everyone involved, including applicants.
