Jet-setting monk 'to return next week'

www.thai-dk.dk/uploads/302jj.jpg

Disciples of Luangpu Nen Kham Chattiko - who was identified as one of three monks seen aboard a private jet in a video clip that has drawn widespread criticism - said yesterday he would return next week from his trip abroad to resume his duties as abbot of Wat Pa Khantitham in Si Sa Ket's Kanthararom district.

The 34-year-old was one of a trio of monks wearing earphones and sunglasses and using a Louis Vuitton bag, in a clip that has been circulating on the Internet since last week, sparking public criticism at the "ostentatious display".

Si Sa Ket's Office of Buddhism director Virod Chaipanna made inquiries at the monastery on Monday and was told the monk had gone on pilgrimage abroad.

The Nation visited the monastery yesterday and was told by a male disciple, who gave his name as Kung, that the abbot often travelled by helicopter or jet provided by devoted disciples in response to urgent invitations to preach in other provinces. The disciple said that the critics of the video clip were motivated by envy.

et nyt sted, er en munk kommet i søgelyset

Villagers 'fed up' with Surin monk
SURIN - Villagers have urged political leaders to take action against the deputy abbot of a temple who allegedly is involved in the sexual abuse of a novice, and misuse of donations.

Villagers lodged a complaint at the Ban Nong Lek Tambon Administration Organisation (TAO) against Phra Chalard Nipgo of Wat Ban Nong Lek in Srikhoraphum district, alleging "inappropriate behaviour" by the monk.

A 13-year-old novice monk told villagers that the senior monk had touched him inappropriately, and accused him ot doing the same to other young monks at the monastery, on several occasions.

The complaint also alleged that the deputy abbot has become notorious locally for other misbehaviour, including the general problem of "stirring up conflict among the people".

Boontham Juengwichit, a villager, accused the monk of using donated money to purchase a pickup truck, without consulting the townspeople.

The villagers submitted formal complaints to district and provincial authorities on May 31, but said they had not heard back, and so decided to escalate their accusations.

Phra Chlard told reporters on Tuesday that his conflicts with local people stemmed from differing political beliefs, and denied he was the cause of disagreements.

He explained that the pickup truck purchase was decided by the temple's committee and treasurer, and the vehicle was not meant for his personal use. He denied any sexual abuse took place.

Komsan Yodwichitpaisarn, chief of the tambon administration organisation, urged the Buddhism Provincial Office to quickly step in and resolve the problem.

Monks 'pimped boy' for senior monk

Chiang Mai police on Wednesday detained two monks accused of luring a 14-year-old boy into performing sexual acts with a famous monk in Chiang Mai province.

Pol Col Veerachon Boontawee, of Muang Chiang Mai police station, named the two suspects as Bandit Boonkhum, 23, and Saranyaphat Rungruang, 20.

The two men denied all charges and refused to leave the monkhood. They were later freed on bail of 200,000 baht each.

The parents of the 14-year-old boy told police that the two monks lured their son into having sex with a senior monk in Chiang Mai's Chiang Dao district.

Pol Col Veerachon said investigators had prepared a case and obtained a court arrest warrant for the senior monk.

However, when they raided the temple the senior monk had already fled. He was not named.

-Den sædvanlige "råddenskab" man ser indenfor religioner hvor præsterne skal leve i cølibat. F. eks. også de katolske præster.

They were later freed on bail of 200,000 baht each.

Hvor mon de 400.000 baht kom fra? - Donerede penge ??:VI

Partying monks had drugs, gun, porn.

AYUTTHAYA – Two monks were arrested by police on Friday for inappropriate behaviour and possession of methamphetamine pills (yaba), alcoholic beverages, pornographic material and a pistol.

Police said Phra Suksawad Sutiyano (real name Suksawad Sawaengkar), 31, and Phra Ponsit Prapatoh (real name Ponsit Santatponlakarn), 42, were caught drinking beer and watching pornography in Wat Phra Ngam.

Officers also found three yaba pills and a pistol with two rounds at the monk's dwelling.

The monks said under questioning they took some methamphetamine before they started partying. They said local teenagers sold the drugs to them for 150 baht a pill.

Police raided Suksawad’s dormitory quarters after they have received complaints from both villagers and the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) about the monks' misbehaviour.

Police said both monks would be expelled by Phra Kru Sukit Sungkagorn, abbot of Wat Phra Ngam, and then taken into custody for further investigation.

On Oct 18 in Chon Buri province, police raided a temple and arrested five monks having a party with alcohol, drugs and women in their living quarters.

Police seized drug paraphernalia, methamphetamine tablets, alcohol, pornography, knives and a gun.

All five monks were expelled from the temple and taken into custody by the police.

US court grants extradition for former Thai monk

Thai prosecutors will fly to the US to bring back the disgraced former monk Nen Kham after the California court approved his extradition, provided he doesn't appeal.

Wirapol Sukphol, 38, better known as Nen Kham after his monk name Luang Pu Nen Kham Chattiko, fled Thailand in 2013. He was disrobed after inappropriate behaviours including having sex, boasting about supernatural power and leading an extravagant life with his private jet and brand-name luggage.

Amnat Chotichai, director general of foreign affairs office the Attorney’s General Office, said on Saturday after the court’s approval, a team of prosecutors and special investigation officials, would escort him back to Thailand, provided Mr Wirapol did not appeal.

The former jet-setting monk and well-known preacher from Kanchanaburi is on arrest warrants for public fraud, having sex with underage women and money laundering.

The Department of Special Investigation earlier seized 380 million baht worth of his assets

Thai prosecutors asked the US for cooperation to extradite him in 2016.

According to a September 2015 report from the US, he opened the five-rai Wat Pa Kanti Baramee in Lake Elsinore, San Diego. He reportedly said he was founding a new Buddhist cult that had nothing to do with Thailand’s Sangha and would register it as a foundation.

A team of prosecutors and DSI officials were dispatched to the US to bring Mr Wirapol back to Thailand. They were expected to arrive around 11pm on Wednesday, said Pol Col Paisit.

Upon arrival at Suvarnabhumi airport, Mr Wirapol would be taken to the DSI for further questioning. He would be taken to court on Friday. Although the suspect had the right to seek bail, the DSI would oppose it as he had a tendency to flee.

Defrocked monk Wiraphon back in Thailand to face charges

www.thai-dk.dk/uploads/munk22223333.JPG

Fugitive defrocked monk Luang Pu Nenkham, or Wiraphon Sukphon, was immediately taken in a security motorcade to the Department of Special Investigation head office on Wednesday after he arrived at Suvaranabhumi Airport on a late-night flight from the United States.

DSI chief Pol Col Phaisit Wongmuang and Pol Lt Gen Phaisith Sangkhahapong, commissioner of the Police Foreign Affairs Bureau, took Wiraphon from the airport at 11.30pm to the DSI head office.

When he arrived at the airport at 10pm, Wiraphon was still wearing the orange saffron of Buddhist monks although the Sangha Council has defrocked him in absentia. He later changed to layman's clothes at the DSI.

Security was stepped up at the DSI head office as Wiraphon was detained there pending further legal action. He is currently facing a total of six charges.

Wiraphon was taken from the airport in a motorcade of a Toyota Camry car and two Toyota Fortuner SUVs. When he exited a Toyota Fortuner, he was flanked by some 10 DSI officials and taken into the DSI building amid a cluster of about 100 reporters and photographers.

The ex-monk is charged with loading false information onto computer networks; cheating the public; money laundering; raping a child no older than 15; molesting a child no older than 15; taking a child no older than 15 away from parents without decent reason.

Ex-monk Nen Kham sentenced to 114 years in jail

www.thai-dk.dk/uploads/0_Wirapol-Sukphol-former-.jpg

The Criminal Court on Thursday sentenced former monk Nen Kham to 114 years in jail for deceiving 29 people into donating to bogus Buddhism and
disaster relief projects and using the money to buy a jet and luxury cars.

Wirapol Sukphol, 39, was a monk at Wat Pa Khantitham in Kanthrarom district, Si Sa Ket province. Also known as Nen Kham, he had been extradited
from the United States last year and jailed since.

In July last year, public prosecutors told the court that from Feb 17, 2009, to June 27, 2013, Nen Kham had told people that in his dream deity Indra had
asked him to build the world's largest Buddha image made from emerald to be housed by a grand temple, as well as a gold image of himself and more
temples in Ubon Ratchathani and Suphan Buri provinces.

He then invited people to make donations including cash, gold and other assets for his projects, as well as his plan to buy boats from the US to help flood
victims.

Besides, he had input false information on construction for the projects via www.luangpunenkha... Later 29 people filed their complaint that they
were lured into believing that Nen Kham was a good monk and they donated cash and other assets worth altogether 28.65 million baht.
Nen Kham denied all charges.

The court found that Nen Kham did not implement the projects. He instead used the donated money to finance his lavish lifestyle, including buying a
private jet and many expensive vehicles including Porsche and BMW cars, all of which were registered under his name.

Earlier, the Civil Court confiscated 43.49 million baht from Nen Kham as he was unable to explain the sources of his wealth.

On Thursday, the Criminal Court sentenced him to 87 years in jail for public fraud, three years for computer crime and 24 years for money-laundering.

However, the court capped his serving jail term at the maximum 20 years as required under Section 91 of the Penal Code for multiple offences.
The court also ordered him to repay the 29 complainants.

Nen Kham was also tried on the charge of raping a minor. The alleged offence forced him to leave monkhood and the Criminal Court had yet to lay its
ruling on the case.

Thailand’s infamous “jet-set monk” was convicted of raping an underage girl Wednesday, a court official said, in a case that has rocked an already scandal-mired Buddhist clergy.

In Wednesday’s ruling, which found him guilty of rape and separating the girl from her parents, the court said he had given the Buddhist faith a “bad reputation”.

“He used his monkhood, which Thai people respect,” the court official told AFP.

Wiraphon’s 16-year custodial sentence punishment will be added to the 20-year prison term he received in August after being found guilty of multiple counts of fraud.
