Russian Tourist Strangled to Death in Soi Buakhao Hotel Room
A 39-year-old Russian tourist and architect from St. Petersburg was found dead in a hotel room on Soi Buakhao Tuesday afternoon, apparently strangled to death with a belt during a fight. Hotel staff said that the Russian would go out every night and get very drunk. He would take women back to his room every night, while many Thai and foreign men would also visit him.

The victim, identified as Mr. Andrei Komarov, was found by police lying on the floor close to the bed, wearing only jeans but no shirt and bleeding from his eyes and nose. The Russian’s throat and left arm were badly bruised, and there were bloodstains all over the floor, as well as on the wall and the bed. There was evidence of a violent struggle, with water bottles scattered around the room, and police also found "many condoms" on the bed.

The victim's body was stiffening from rigor mortis, and a forensic doctor estimated he had been dead for about 8-10 hours. A belt, thought to have been used to strangle the victim, was found on the dressing table next to the table. The buckle had been ripped off, possibly during a fight with his murderer. While it appears that nothing of value was taken and the man's mobile phone, passport and credit cards were still in the room, police did not find a wallet or any cash.

Hotel staff revealed that the Russian had checked into the hotel in mid-February. He had paid his bill in advance and was due to check out on the day of his murder. Staff said the man would go out every night and usually get very drunk. He would bring back women to sleep in his room every night, and many Thai and foreign men would also visit him occasionally.

A full murder investigation is now underway as police check security cameras at the hotel and further question hotel staff. For now, police assume the killer or killers must have been similar in size and strength to the victim as he had obviously died while fighting. Pattaya One PDN

UPDATE - After inspecting CCTV images taken at the hotel, police have identified a 37-year-old Thai woman as the last person seen to enter and leave the Russian's room. Police were able to identify her as "as the hotel keep copies of ID Cards or passports of unregistered guests."

"Pending the results of the postmortem examination, police have not ruled out erotic asphyxiation or even suicide as a cause of death; but with signs of a struggle ... murder is still the more likely cause of death." Pattaya One
